Achievement; Honour Roll

"Wing-Commander" by Dudley Wood

ACHIEVEMENT

  • FIGURES are notoriously dull. We flick them over casually in the papers. They don't convey much; flow over our consciousness like oil off a wing surface. Such items as:
    • The R.A.A.F. has flown 80,000,000 miles since war began.
    • R.A.A.F. pilots have completed 500,000 operational hours, 100,000 sorties.
    • Australian airmen have won 2286 decorations.
    • Our airmen have sunk 81 ships and submarines, sunk or damaged 235 others.

Put that way they don't mean much, these cold, mathematical integers from official reports, the labour of statisticians, skeletal residue of deeds which cost blood and sweat and superhuman effort. Deeds such as:

"Forced to bale out of their disintegrating Wellington the entire crew abandoned the damaged aircraft in pitch darkness, not knowing the nature of the country below. . . ."

"Without navigational aids the Mosquito flew off its course . . . when the pilot turned towards Berlin he received a hit in the starboard motor, which 'packed up'."

"On the way out their aircraft was hit 'by anti-aircraft shells, which exploded in the fuselage, rendering the rudder useless and the elevators ineffective."

"In the face of a trying situation the pilot displayed fine airmanship and, splendidly supported by his gunner, whose skill destroyed two of the enemy planes and drove off a third, he eventually flew the aircraft back to an aerodrome."

"Then, through lack of food and water they walked for miles across country back to the aerodrome. . . ."

"M-- was struck in the leg by a bullet. Although suffering great pain be continued to the target which he successfully attacked."

"A flight-lieutenant had his hydraulic undercarriage system shot away and his starboard rudder cables severed.... He made a perfect belly landing. . . ."

Even when nothing happens, except the unwinding panorama of sea, jungle, green fields or rugged mountains, there is no real relaxation of effort. At any moment a swift M.E.109 or a tricky, maneuverable Zero may whip down out of the sun. True, latterly, the Luftwaffe had lost command of the skies, the Japanese Air Force had shown reluctance to stay up and fight. But pilots who presume on such things are usually among the pilots who fail to return.

The figures, too, are remarkable when you really examine them. What does 8o,ooo,ooo miles really mean? You'd cover the distance it you circled the earth 3,213 times; on the same mileage you could get to and from the moon 166 times. Travelling by Douglas you'd be in the air for over 40 years to cover the same ground . Certainly 80,000,000 miles is no inconsiderable figure.

Nor do these figures give an overall picture of R.A.A.F. achievement since the war began. They merely record the work of purely R.A.A.F. units. Actually in the United Kingdom there are more Australians serving in the R.A.F. than in the 100 per cent R.A.A.F. squadrons. For the same reason it is impossible at this stage to collate the impressive achievements of R.A.A.F. members in the Middle East, the Mediterranean, India and Burma. Most of the R.A.A.F. in these areas are serving with R.A.F. units.

On September 3, 1939, the R.A.A.F. had 3000 personnel, 40 first-line aircraft (that's what we called them, anyhow) and 20 others. Total manpower strength is now more than forty times greater. At the end of August 1944 those serving abroad totaled 21,533, all of them outside the South-west Pacific area. Most of these are based in Britain but 4000 are serving in the Middle East and Mediterranean and over 1,000 in India.

This expansion has cost £350,000-000; £347,822,931 more than the total Australian budget for civil and military aviation in 1937-38; more, too, than most of the wars of the British Empire cost prior to 1914.

  • The 2,286 decorations won include
    • three Victoria Crosses,
    • three Companions of the Order of the Bath,
    • 13 Commanders of the Order of the British Empire,
    • 28 Officers of the Order of the British Empire,
    • 49 Members of the Order of the British Empire,
    • 43 D.S.Os,
      • 1 bar to D.S.O.,
    • 3 M.Cs,
    • 969 D.F.Cs
      • 53 bars to D.F.C.,
    • 73 A.F.Cs,
    • 7 C.G.MS,
    • 2 M.Ms,
    • 312 D.F.Ms
      • two bars,
    • 12 A.F.Ms,
    • 11 Georae Medals, and
    • 30 B.E.Ms.
    • Thirty members have won foreign awards and
    • 585 have been mentioned in dispatches.
      • Eight have been mentioned in dispatches twice.
    • Fifty-seven have been commended.

Just another list, something to skim over? Yet, behind it, this:

"Flight-Lieutenant William Newton . . . dived over half a mile through intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire in order to bomb his target at the lowest possible altitude. . . . His aircraft suffered from direct hits. . . . On the following day Flight-Lieutenant Newton without hesitation ... repeated this magnificent act.... His aircraft burst into flames.... He gave his life in the service of his country."

"A piece of splinter tore into the side of Flight-Lieutenant Rawdon Hume Middleton's face, destroying the right eve and exposing the bone.... Middleton expressed intention of trying to make the English coast so that his crew could leave the aircraft by parachute

although he knew that by then he would have little or no chance to save himself. . . . Five of the crew left the aircraft safely.... Their gallant captain was apparently unable to leave the aircraft and his body was not recovered."

"Wing-Commander Hugh Idwal Edwards . . . brought his formation 50 miles overland to the target, flying at a height of little more than 50 feet, passing under high-tension cables, carrying away telegraph wires and finally passing through a formidable balloon barrage . . . all his aircraft being hit and four destroyed. . . . Nevertheless he made a successful attack and . . . withdrew the surviving aircraft without further loss."

"Squadron-Leader Harold Brownlow Martin ... was detailed to attack a target in southern France. His aircraft was repeatedly hit during the run-up.... One of his crew was killed and another wounded. . . . Squadron-Leader Martin pressed home his attack and afterwards flew his damaged bomber to an airfield where he effected a masterly landing in difficult circumstances."

The cost has not been light.

  • Casualties by the end of August 1944 totaled
    • 5,831 killed,
    • 2,368 missing,
    • 845 prisoners, and
    • 2,483 wounded or injured.
  • Of these totals
    • 3,880 were killed overseas and
    • 1,951 in the South-west Pacific area,
    • 1,835 missing overseas and
    • 533 in the S.W.P.A.,
    • 835 prisoners of war overseas and
    • 10 in the S.W.P.A., and
    • 1,248 wounded overseas and
    • 1,235 in the S.W.P.A.

  • Since the war began R.A.A.F. squadrons in the United Kingdom have flown
    • 124,884 operational hours on
    • 25,495 sorties, covering
    • 20,359,006 miles.
  • They have destroyed
    • 28 enemy ships (including submarines),
    • probably destroyed two and damaged 122.
  • They have destroyed
    • 97 enemy aircraft,
    • probably destroyed 56 and
    • damaged 148.

To these must be added many locomotives, trains, transformer stations, enemy M.T. and tanks. These figures do not include the achievements of Australian aircrews serving with the R.A.F. nor of two R.A.A.F. squadrons which, after notable service in the United Kingdom, moved to Australia, and one which went to the Middle East.

  • Outstanding R.A.A.F. performances in the United Kingdom include:
    • Ten per cent of the total Bomber Command tonnage in 25 operations during the pre-invasion barrage.
    • R.A.A.F. Spitfires based in Normandy destroyed or damaged 3o enemy transports in one day.
    • A R.A.A.F. Spitfire squadron in two months destroyed, probably destroyed, or damaged 500 enemy motor transports, armoured vehicles or tanks.
    • In one sortie R.A.A.F. Spitfires destroyed seven and damaged several of 20 enemy aircraft encountered.
    • In August R.A.A.F. bomber squadrons dropped 5,700 tons on 48 targets and made 1,164 sorties.
    • During invasion month No. 10 Squadron (Sunderlands) broke the previous Sunderland record by flying 1,000 hours.
    • R.A.A.F. squadrons sank three of five U-boats bagged in Coastal Command's most successful ten days.
    • R.A.A.F. Wellingtons broke the record for the number of bombs dropped and mines laid in one month.
    • In 1943 R.A.A.F. Lancaster squadrons were out 138 nights, bombing 46 different targets and winning 146 decorations.
    • In 1941 R.A.A.F. Spitfires shot down 55 enemy aircraft in four months, holding the Fighter Command lead for three of them.

In the South-west Pacific the R.A.A.F. flew 25,932 sorties in the first seven months of 1944, compared with 35,678 sorties for the whole of 1943. The bomb load has steadily mounted as Allied air blows are doubled and trebled against Japan's shrinking co-prosperity sphere. In 1942 the R.A.A.F. bomb load was 659 tons, in 1943 it rose to 1404 tons and for the first seven months of 1944 to 4336 tons. Ammunition expended over the same period rose from 40,823,000 rounds to 130,820,000 rounds.

Australian S.W.P.A. pilots are now flying Liberators, Mitchells (B.25s), Lightnings, Spitfires, Kittyhawks, Beaufighters, Bostons, Beauforts, Catalinas, Sunderlands, Boomerangs, Douglases and Lodestars. In 1942 they were using 50 types; in 1943, 61; in 1944, 66. R.A.A.F. S.W.P.A. transport squadrons flew 8,084,387 miles in the first six months of 1944, compared with a total of 4,212,355 for 1943, They carried 23,688 tons for a similar period compared with 15,299 tons in 1943.

  • A S.W.P.A. Kittyhawk Wing has an outstanding record, which includes:
    • A total Of 2862 sorties, taking 7463 operational hours, for a period of two months.
    • Destruction of ten out of fifteen enemy aircraft for the loss of one in combat over Biak.
    • An increase of 150 per cent in the last few months over what was the normal flying effort.

There are approximately 40oo R.A.A.F. personnel in the Middle East and Mediterranean, 2200 of them aircrew in operations, Of the rest 5oo are aircrew in training and 1,000 ground staff. Besides the 100 per cent R.A.A.F. squadrons Australians are serving in more than 300 R.A.F. units in this war theatre.

In the second quarter of this year R.A.A.F. Middle East and Mediterranean squadrons made 5,743 sorties, flew 11,833 operational hours, destroyed ten enemy aircraft, probably destroyed another, and damaged two. One ship was destroyed, another probably sunk, and four damaged.

From June 1943 to August 20, 1944, the R.A.A.F. in this war theatre flew 19,792
sorties, involving 53,149 operational hours; destroyed 16 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed one and damaged 11; sank three ships, probably sank five and damaged 38.

During its full operational period in the Middle East No- 3 Squadron has made 13,846 sorties, flown 2 1,000 operational hours, destroyed 165 enemy planes, probably destroyed 46 and damaged 147, besides sinking a ship, probably sinking another one and damaging five.

No- 450 Squadron during its operational tour has made 10,413 sorties, flown 16,253 hours, destroyed 46 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed 25 and damaged 116. In addition this squadron damaged ten ships and probably sank two.

No. 451 Squadron has made 607 sorties, flown 11,374 hours, destroyed 13 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed one and damaged three, besides sinking a ship and damaging three others.

Some of the most spectacular work in this area was done by Australians in R.A.F. Wellington units which flew from Italy to Munich and the Balkans. Two R.A.A.F. Kittyhawk squadrons gave excellent support to land forces in Italy and R.A.A.F. Spitfires helped cover the landings in the south of France on August 15, 1944

Members of the R.A.A.F. have been in India for over two and a half years. In 1942 they numbered approximately 250; in 1943 the total reached 5oo; by the end of August 1944 there were more than iooo. All are serving with R.A.F. units. In this theatre Australians have won a D.S.O., 18 D.F.Cs, mo bars to D.F.Cs, and two D.F.Ms. Six aircrew have been mentioned in dispatches.

In 1942, during the Battle of Burma, two Blenheim squadrons, one with 70 per cent and the other with 60 per cent R.A.A.F. personnel, bore the brunt of the bombing attacks. One of these squadrons was the first bomber squadron to go into action from India and in June 1943 it became the first to reach iooo sorties and drop 1,000,000 pounds of bombs. When the Japanese fleet, with air cover, attacked Colombo in April 1942 a Blenheim squadron, with go per cent Australian crews, fought them off and inflicted heavy casualties.

R.A.A.F.-manned Beaufighters have destroyed and damaged hundreds of locomotives in Burma besides strafing steamers, sampans, oil and ammunition dumps and troop installations.

A Wellington squadron, commanded by an Australian and with 58 Australians in its aircrew strength, has bombed targets in Bangkok, Akyab, Mandalay, and Prome. Hundreds of R.A.A.F. aircrew members are now serving in Liberators.

The first four Japanese aircraft destroyed in this theatre after the arrival of a R.A.F. Spitfire squadron were credited to Australian pilots.

Australians predominated in the transport squadron which flew Wingate's men to Burma and kept the expedition in supplies.

When war began Australia had no aircraft industry. On August 31, 1944, the Department of Aircraft Production took delivery of the 7ooth Australian-made Beaufort bomber. Behind that event lay a record of energy, loyalty and industry by men and women who, although not in the fighting services, contributed whole-heartedly to Australia's magnificent war effort. Together with the technical staff and the organizing directorate they welded an organization capable, already, of constructing the most modem war planes.

By the time the 700th Beaufort was ready for the air Australian-made Beaufighters and Mosquitoes were already off the assembly lines. In addition the Boomerang, a typically Australian aircraft built to a completely Australian design, had achieved a reputation as an army co-operation and reconnaissance plane. . training aircraft have also been produced in Australia. One of these, the Wirraway, had to take the first impact of the Japanese Air Force at Rabaul early in 1942. Without it, and Australian-built Tiger Moths, we might not have been able to meet our obligations under the Empire Air Training Scheme. The Wackett Trainer, another aircraft of Australian design and construction, has also been extensively used at some of our elementary flying schools.

This, then, is the record, the bare bones of the everlasting fact that in the most gigantic struggle for freedom in the history of man, Australian men, women and machines have played no mean part.
