EDITORIAL NOTES

AS YOU WERE 1949 continues the service rendered by its predecessors. Its aim is to recall and to record the courage and humour, the boredom and the achievements, the travel and adventure, deeds and misdeeds, and, above all, the good comradeship of the Services during the war years.

The book is the work of Service and ex-Service men and women. The views expressed are those of the writers themselves. Without their help the book could not have been produced, and their collaboration is gratefully acknowledged.

Literary and art responsibility has largely rested with Tom Hungerford and Frank Norton respectively. Raymond O'Malley, Harold F. Ward and Charles A. Monticone have also rendered valuable service. The executives and staff of Halstead Press Pty. Ltd. have, as in the past, been unsparing in their efforts to produce a book of the finest quality. The assistance of all of these is also gratefully acknowledged.

Amongst those who read this book there will be many who have yarns of their own to tell. They are invited to send contributions to the Director, Australian War Memorial, Canberra, for consideration for use in future volumes.

THE EDITOR

Landing at Oesapa Besar by Charles Bush

To The Memory of Fallen Comrades

They gave their lives.

For that public gift they received a praise which never ages and a tomb most glorious - not so much the tomb in which they lie, but that in which their fame survives, to be remembered for ever when occasion comes for word or deed . . ."

Set up, printed and bound in  Australia by Halstead Press Pty Limited, 9-19 Nickson Street, Sydney, 1949. Registered in Australia for transmission through the post as a book.
