The Campaign in Greece. The New Zealand Division in Action

 F 0 R E W 0 R D

'CAMPAIGN IN GREECE' is the second number in a series of publications outlining the story of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

The series is intended to give a connected account of each phase in the history of the Force, thus bridging the gap which must lie between the war correspondents' despatches and the official history that will be written after the war.

As Lieutenant-General Sir B. C. Freyberg pointed out when introducing the first number, these ' interim histories ' are subject to certain limitations.

While the war is still in progress, it is clearly impossible to publish all the facts that are on record. Meanwhile certain other facts must remain

in obscurity until peace brings with it the conditions for collecting and sifting all the available evidence.

For these reasons omissions will be noted in the surveys and, in spite of vigilant checking, there will be some inaccuracies.

One incidental purpose of the series will be achieved, however, if lacunae and errors are noted while the events are still comparatively recent and before they are finally placed on record by official historians.

<<< General Sir H. Maitland Wilson.

The scope of this survey is, of necessity, restricted.

Campaign in Greece is mainly about New Zealanders, and it has been written primarily for a New Zealand public. Hence, although the work of other Allied and British forces in Greece has been described, the stress has been placed throughout on the New Zealand Division. For a more general account of the operations readers are referred to The Campaign in Greece and Crete (1942) issued in London for the War Office.

Campaign in Greece was produced in the office of the Official Archivist, 2 NZEF, Middle East. The cover design and three paintings and sketches were the work of Captain Peter McIntyre, Official Artist, 2 NZEF. The other paintings were reproduced from the originals by Second-Lieutenant Don McNab, New Zealand Engineers. The maps and diagrams were prepared by Private R. L. Chemis, 2 NZEF, and the photographs were obtained from official collections and from private photographers. The poem, 'Greece - A Year Ago', by Charles Smith, 2 NZEF, is republished from the Palestine Post of 7 April, 1942. Acknowledgments are made for this and for other assistance in the production of the survey.
