Summary history of the division

The Division was a formation created by the establishment of the Territorial Force in 1908.

Gallipoli

July 1915 : embarked at Liverpool, for Mudros

10 August 1915 : landed at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli

December 1915 : withdrawn from Gallipoli, moved to Egypt, and eventually into Palestine

Palestine

After gradual demobilisation, the Division was disbanded in Egypt in September 1919, and was reformed at home in 1920.

    • In September 1915, became dismounted and moved to ANZAC bridgehead on Gallipoli, from 1st Mounted Division.

    • A Squadron , the 1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry (joined 20 March 1916, left 26 August 1917)

    • 54th (East Anglian) Divisional Cyclist Company (Formed after mobilisation in 1914)


  • Divisional Artillery

    • The Divisional Artillery remained in England when the Division moved to Gallipoli. It moved independently to France in November 1915 coming under the command of 33rd Division. Officers and men were attached to the Divisional Artillery of the 2nd, 7th and 12th Divisions. It moved to Egypt and rejoined the Division in Egypt in February 1916.

54th Divisional Train ASC (The original Divisional Train, composed of 483, 484, 485 and 486 Companies ASC, did not embark for Gallipoli, and was transferred to 27th Division in February 1916. A new Train joined in Egypt by 24 February 1917, consisting of 428, 429, 430 and 431 Companies.)

53rd Sanitary Section

Detachement Francais de Palestine et Syrie, less their cavalry, attached 12 to 28 September 1918.
