At this spot, while constructing the memorial, the remains of two soldiers locked together in a deadly embrace were unearthed from a trench. From the name tags one was identified as First Lieutenant Mustafa Asin, Commander of the 6th Company of the 57th Regiment and the other, Captain L J Walters of the British Army Corps. The two died fighting each other on 26th April 1915. The men were buried with their name tags and the weapons they were carrying were handed to the authorities. May Allah rest their souls.

MARTYR DATE

31 JULY 1331-13 AUGUST 1915

PRAY FOR HIM

  • NOTES :
    • "Martyr" is the Turkish term for soldiers killed in action.
    • 31 July 1331 and 13 Aug 1915 is not two different dates. There are two calendar times. Because the headstone was made after the REPUBLIC OF TURKEY  was formed it shows the date according to the western style calendar, but the war was fought in the time of the OTTOMAN EMPIRE and the Ottoman calendar (moon calendar) (Islamic calendar) was used at that stage, so both dates are shown.
    • Nobody in the  57th Infantry Regiment survived the war.
    • 57th Infantry Regiment was the first to fight the ANZACs.
