This is the gravesite of Turkish Lieutenant Colonel Hussein Manastir. He was the Commanding Officer of the 57th Regiment (not to be confused with the 57th Battalion). In Turkey a Division has 3 Regiments and each Regiment has 3 Battalions, so 9 Battalions to a Division.

Translation:

The Martyrs' Regiment, all martyred in the Ariburnu battles, about which Atatürk referred in his speech.

They drove the enemy forces of 20.000 men to the sea, attacking the ANZAC Army Corps which had landed at Ari Burnu on 25 April 1915 and which was about to capture the Kocaçimen heights. In bloody fighting during the Anafarta battles they prevented the Conkbayır and Kocaçimen areas from being taken by the enemy forces and protected all fronts.

The Commander of the regiment, Lt-Colonel Hüseyin Avni, was martyred here on 13 August, but the regiment continued to fight on bravely until the end of the First World War. The 57th Regiment is one of few regiments awarded the Medal of Honour with gold and silver swords, Merit Medals, the order of Mecidiye with sword, the Turkish War medal and the Order of Demir Salip Ally.

Turkish people will remain eternally proud of these brave soldiers.

MARTYR DATE

31 JULY 1331-13 AUGUST 1915

PRAY FOR HIM

  • NOTES :
    • "MARTYR" is the Turkish name for soldiers killed in action. Martyr Date is the date he was KIA.
    • 31 July 1331 and 13 Aug 1915 is not two different dates. There are two calendar times. Because headstone was made after the REPUBLIC OF TURKEY  was formed it has the western style calendar. But war was fought in the OTTOMAN EMPIRE time and the Ottoman calendar (moon calendar) (Islamic calendar) was used.
    • Nobody in the  57th Infantry Regiment survived the war.
    • 57th Infantry Regiment was the first to fight the ANZACs.
