| These two
images (1 a book cover) both illustrate the Australians at Gallipoli
wearing British issue pith helmets. That is closer to the truth than the
commonly held belief that the Aussies wore slouch hats. Some did, but
most wore the British "Service Cap" or the pith helmet. (Images:

| The
Broken Hills of the Gallipoli Peninsular. When the Allies landed troops
to aid in opening the way to Constantinople they found the Peninsular
well fortified against them. In December 1915 after months of fighting
with severe losses, they withdrew from the Suvla Bay and Anzac coasts. |

troops landing at Salonika. In the background are the city of Salonika
and ships which bought French & British troops from the Dardanelles.
After withdrawal from Serbia, the Allies reinforced the army under
General Surrail. |

| Anzac
artillery in the Battle of the Somme. Anzac troops (Australian & New
Zealand Army Corps) hold part of the British lines in France as well as
in the Balkans. In this view they have placed a large gun in position
and the prolonged artillery fire that usually preceeds an attempt to
advance their lines. When this ceases the infantry will cross ground and
trenches entirely pulverized by the rain of shells. |

| Australian
Troops Passing Through Sydney Australia. Australia has an excellent
system of compulsory military training and, like Canada, she came
loyally to the support of the British Empire during the war. Here are
volunteers from New South Wales passing through Martin Place, Sydney, on
their way to the transports that are to take them to Gallipoli. |

| Turkish
camps at Gallipoli. The skilled resistance of the Turks to the attacks
of the Allies has proved one of the surprises of the war. Not only have
their troops saved the Dardanelles, Constantinople and Bagdad but their
troops threaten Egypt and the Suez Canal. |
