The Anzac Story for young people

Click to go to this page As an original Anzac who took part in most of the events described, I have written this story mainly from my own personal knowledge of what took place. There were, however, some important battles in which I took no part, such as the fighting at Cape Helles and the Turkish attack at Anzac on May 19th, when I was in hospital recovering from a wound received at the Landing.

In writing of these events, and some others, I have relied on "The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914-18", by C. E. W. Bean, for a general description of the battles and in checking dates and names. In some instances I have quoted passages direct from the history and I would like to express my thanks to Dr. C. E. W. Bean for his permission to do so.

I have also, as is acknowledged in the text, quoted from "Gallipoli" by John Masefield.

Introduction

EVERY year as Anzac Day comes round you children of Australia and New Zealand hear, at commemoration services, of the Spirit of Anzac. Perhaps in your young minds there arises a desire to know more of Anzac.
  • This story tells you, in simple language, how the Spirit of Anzac was born.
