As an original Anzac who took part in most of the events described, I
have written this story mainly
from my own personal knowledge of what took place.
There were, however, some important battles in which I took no part,
such as the fighting at Cape Helles and the Turkish attack at Anzac on
May 19th, when I was in hospital recovering from a wound received at the
Landing.
In writing of these events, and some
others, I have relied on "The Official History of Australia in the
War of 1914-18", by C. E. W. Bean, for a general description of the
battles and in checking dates and names. In some instances I have quoted
passages direct from the history and I would like to express my thanks
to Dr. C. E. W. Bean for his permission to do so.
I have also, as is acknowledged in the
text, quoted from "Gallipoli" by John Masefield. |
