"Kireçtepe" area between Suvla & Anafarta

This area was the scene of fierce fighting in August 1915 (The August Offensive).

Turkish (in some case later Allied) trenches and dugouts at Kireçtepe, overlooking Suvla.

  • Originally the Turkish defensive line at Karakol Dag.
  • Later this became the Allied 2nd line of defence.

Dugouts on the southern slope in the Kireçtepe area.

Trench line on the southern slope, overlooking Salt Lake at Suvla. The front line near Jepsons Post. Note the rocks that made digging trenches very difficult.

Some Turkish trench lines were built using the abundant supplies of natural rock.

As the ground was full of rock digging was very difficult and therefore trenches and dugouts were very often half built (or more) with local stone.
