Leaders of the
Australian Imperial Force |
| In
the AIF most generals had originally obtained their commissions in
the Army by direct commissioning, but (unlike
the British Army) 40% were
commissioned from, or after service in the ranks:
Bessell-Browne, Cox, Dodds, Elliott, Forsyth, Glasgow, Goddard,
Griffiths, Hobbs, Holmes, Hughes, Irving, Jess, Jobson, Johnston,
MacLaurin, Martin, Monash, Moore, Rosenthal, Ryrie, Sellheim,
Sinclair-MacLagan, Smith, Stewart, Wilson and Wisdom. Many people
believe that better command was the result with less of the class
distinction of the British Army and a greater concern for the welfare of
the men. |
