British General Service badge. In different sizes this badge has been used as Helmet Plates, cap badges, Warrant Officer rank badges and more. Even buttons used the design, see below.

The two mottoes on the G/S badge are;
  • Dieu et Mon Droit; (French) (God and my right).
  • Honi Soit Qui Mal Y Pense (French) (Shame on him who thinks this evil).
A rough translation of the meaning of the word (Service) in a Battalion's title indicates that it is a unit formed to serve for the duration of the war only .

  • The London Regiment raised over 80 battalions, all Territorial Force (militia) as it had no regular army battalions nor any New Army battalions. It formed 4 entire Divisions.  As a result there were many badges. The Regiment fought with great distinction on the Western Front, Gallipoli and in Palestine.
