1915 at Gallipoli |

| This
image is from an American made movie, "Lawrence of Arabia".
Whether or not the uniforms and the badges of rank are accurate is
debatable. |

| Brass; White
metal; Turkish army rectangular brass belt buckle with attached white
metal circular badge.
This white metal badge features, in
relief on a pebbled background, a crescent moon, the upward facing
horns of which enclose a five pointed star. The entire buckle has been
highly polished. The crescent would have originally contained the Arabic
script for 'Asakr-i Shahaneh' meaning 'Imperial Army', but parts of
this script have been erased by polishing.
On
the underside of the buckle is a rotating brass rod with two small
metal prongs which would have attached to holes in the leather belt.
There is also a square brass loop attached to the back of the buckle
to accommodate the belt clip, which is still attached, but removable. AWM

| Turkish Army
Other Ranks coarse green cotton jacket, which is a very similar
pattern to the German Army 'Bluse' jacket, but is significantly
inferior in quality.
This single breasted jacket has a
stand and fall collar, fastened with a single steel hook-and-eye
fitting.
There are five grey ferrous metal
buttons down the front opening. |
 |
| A
pocket with a pointed flap has been let into both of the front panels
below the waistline. The underside of both of the flaps is lined with
decoratively printed fabric, and a different design has been used on
each of them. The jacket is 'as worn' without insignia. It is fully
lined with coarse white cotton fabric and has a drawstring gather
across the waistline at the back. There are some minor white paint(?)
stains on the lower left sleeve and left front panel. |
 |
Turkish
Army Other Ranks coarse green cotton and wool blend breeches. The
single button on the waistband is made of white plastic but the two
other buttons on the concealed fly are missing.
There is a pocket with a vertical
slit opening on both hips, just in front of the leg side seam. The
knees are patched with self fabric. Pairs of buttons fasten the
vertical opening on the side of the leg cuffs.
On the right leg there is one white
plastic and a German grey pressed metal button bearing the word 'HEERESAUSRUSTUNG'(?).
Only a single white plastic button remains on the left cuff.
Across the back of the waist is an
adjustment strap, which has dark stains adjacent to it. There are some
faint blue Turkish markings printed on the inside of the waistband on
the left side. AWM REL/01208.003 |
| Turkish
Army Other Ranks coarse fawn cotton and wool blend jacket, which is
similiar to the German Army 'Bluse' jacket, but is significantly
inferior in quality. This single breasted jacket has a stand and fall
collar, fastened with a single steel hook-and-eye fitting. Five plain
metal buttons, and a single German Army button bearing the Prussian
crown, fasten the front opening. They
are not concealed like they are on other Turkish copies of the German
'Bluse' jacket, which are in the AWM's collection.
A pocket with a buttonless pointed flap has been let into both of the
front panels below the waistline. The jacket is 'as worn' without
insignia. The grey and white striped cotton which lines the jacket is
missing from the right front panel. It has a drawstring gather sewn
into the lining of the back panel, at the waist. |

Below. The Turkish
cavalry was at Gallipoli, even though little is said of them. They did
mostly patrol and messenger (galloper) work but they also, at times,
took part in the fighting.
