Original gravesites at Anzac Gallipoli

Gallipoli, Dardanelles, Turkey, c. 1915-05. 

The original grave of Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) George Frederick Braund, Commanding Officer (CO) of the 2nd Battalion, 1st AIF. 

The inscription on the cross reads: "L. Col G. F. Braund, 2 Bn, 4-5-15, NSW, AIF." Lt Col Braund came from Neutral Bay in Sydney and was a Member of the NSW Legislative Assembly. He was accidentally killed by an Australian sentry on 1915-05-04 when he failed to respond to the sentry's challenge. 

The crude cross marking the burial site was later replaced by a neater cross and inscription, and the grave itself was tidied up. (Donor J. Richardson)

Gallipoli. 1915. War grave of Lieutenant William Henry Dawkins, No. 2 Field Company, 1st Divisional Engineers, AIF, who was killed in action on 1915-05-12. 

The grave plaque incorrectly gives the date of death as 1915-05-20.

Gallipoli, Turkey. c. 1915. 

Grave of Sergeant Nairn of the 2nd Field Company, New Zealand Engineers. The smaller cross to the right marks the grave of Private Thomas Enoch Haylock of the 21st Battalion, AIF, who was killed in action on 1915-10-12. (Donor J. Stewart)

Three soldiers in Shrapnel Gully cemetery on the Gallipoli Peninsula tend the grave of 835 Private Patrick Michael McDonough, 7th Battalion, who was killed in action on 5 July 1915.

Note the 3 different styles of head-dress.

Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. 

Grave & headstone of Corporal John Brinsden Vasey of the 7th Field Company Engineers AIF, who died on Malta on 1915-08-14 from wounds received at Gallipoli. He was aged 21 years.

Grave & headstone of Sapper Edward Moore Carter, BE, of 1st Field Company Engineers, AIF. Carter was killed at Gallipoli on 1915-07-23, aged 23 years.

Belemedick, Turkey. C.1916. 

Grave in the Christian Cemetery, of  2181 Private Leonard E. (?George) New, 15th Battalion AIF, a prisoner of war who was captured by the Turks on 1915-08-08 at Gallipoli. 

He died on 1916-05-07 from a rock fall while working on the Baghdad to Berlin Railway. 

His body was later re-interred in the War Cemetery in Baghdad.

Belemedick, Turkey. C.1916. 

Grave, in the Christian Cemetery, of 552 Private William Allen, 9th Battalion AIF, a prisoner of war who was captured by the Turks on 1915-08-26 at Gallipoli. 

He died 1916-12  aged 33 years while working on the Baghdad to Berlin Railway. His body was later re-interred in the War Cemetery in Baghdad.
