104 Field Battery Royal Australian Artillery (4FdBty RAA)

Fortunately, 12 Field Regiment also moved to Townsville on completion of their first tour of South Vietnam and 104 Field Battery to our delight, remained as our direct support battery for our second tour.

Fire Support Base Flintstone, deep in the heart of the High Range Training Area was our first mutually established home.

Built during the middle of 1970, many others were to follow over the next eighteen months in Australia and overseas.

Much to the Battery Commander's chagrin, 4 RAR/NZ was to become quite a mobile battalion, in itself.

Wherever we went, so did they, adjusting to cover us with supporting fire - a tribute to the flexibility of our gunners and their field pieces.

Needless to say the US gave us some good assistance and C Battery (-) 5/42 Artillery Battalion with their 155 millimetre (mediums) at Fire Support Base Cherie threw out the lines where the 105's of 104 couldn't quite reach.

The United States Navy was in the picture by providing support to C Company up in the Nui Dinhs during Operation NORTH WARD from the USS O'CALLAHAN and USS LARSEN.

Upon the formation of the 4 RAR/NZ (ANZAC) Battalion Group our direct support Field Battery became under command - and was affectionately dubbed "104 Company" by the infantrymen who had come to respect their consistently accurate support during many a contact.
